Empowering communities with digital skills to stay safe online, avoid scams, and access job opportunities through hands-on workshops

by SOCIAL BY DESIGN in Manchester, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom

Who We Are

Social By Design is a team founded by three passionate individuals deeply committed to supporting vulnerable communities, particularly refugees and immigrants. We bring our diverse backgrounds in international development, migration, sustainability, and gender issues to every project we undertake. Our team includes members with lived experience as refugees, which brings authenticity, empathy, and cultural sensitivity to our work.

What We’re Doing

We’re launching a Digital Literacy Program to empower refugees and young people in our community with essential digital skills. Our vision is to build safe, informed, and connected communities, where everyone—regardless of background—has the skills to thrive in today’s digital world. We aim to empower refugees and young people with essential digital skills, not only to protect them online but also to unlock opportunities for education and employment.

Through this program, participants will learn to navigate the online world safely and access educational and job opportunities. The funds raised will enable us to develop a comprehensive curriculum and hold workshops covering online safety, scam awareness, and job search skills, followed by long-term mentorship to help participants retain and expand their skills.

The Challenge

Nearly 87% of UK adults have encountered online content suspected to be a scam or fraudulent, with nearly 43 million adults in the UK exposed to such risks. This highlights the widespread nature of online fraud, emphasizing the importance of digital literacy initiatives to protect vulnerable users, including refugees and asylum seekers, from falling victim to these scams.

Many scams target users on social media or via email, so awareness about these types of scams is critical, especially for individuals new to the digital environment.

Why This Matters

We’ve seen how limited digital literacy can leave already vulnerable communities even more exposed to online scams and misinformation. Without the right skills, many refugees and young people are missing out on educational and employment opportunities simply because they don’t know how to access them online. Our vision is to create a safe, informed, and connected community where everyone—regardless of background—has the skills to thrive in today’s digital world.
