We're still collecting donations

On the 5th February 2021 we'd raised £4,385 with 139 supporters in 56 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.

 New stretch target

With the extra money we will purchase a new computer to improve the website-online shop, we will purchase the full Adobe Package membership to work in the creation of better quality images and text for our Instagram post, website layout design.

We will also start to explore the options of opening the bookshop-cafe-event space.

1607462923_librer%C3%ADa_1.jpgRomancero Books is an online independent bookshop selling literature published in Spain and Latin America. Our aim is to make accessible to everyone who speak Spanish or is learning Spanish in the UK the latest books written in that language. We also have sections about short stories, books about the diaspora, new LGBT voices and books translated to English but written originally in Spanish. We also sell literature in Catalan, Galician and Basque.

Romancero Talks

In the last few months we have been curating a series of talks about contemporary Spanish literature called Romancero Talks. The first of these talks were founded by the Office of Cultural and Scientific Affairs at the Spanish Embassy in the UK, and we are currently planning more of this talk for 2021 and looking for other sources of funding.

The first talks are available to watch here: https://spainculturescience.co.uk/event/romancero-talks/

All these talks were translated and subtitled to English.

Corcel de Fuego and Evocación

At the end of November we recordered a talk about two women poets of the Spanish Literature period known as the Silver Age. Lucía Sánchez Saornil and Pilar de Valderrama.

This talk was supported by the University of Exeter, the Association of Hispanits of Great Britain and Ireland, Torremozas editions, the Cervantes Institue of London and the Office of Cultural and Scientific Affairs at the Spanish Embassy in the UK.

Frente a Frente

Another series of talks titled 'frente a frente' or 'tête-à-tête' are curated by Romancero Books with no funding. In these talks we invite writers to talk about their books for 30 minutes on a video call. The only requisite to take part on the talk is to have published the book in an independent publisher.

  • Our business opened last June and the welcoming by the community has been excellent but as many other businesses in 2020 and in particular the ones related to culture, the bookshop is also suffering the difficulties of this year, in our case because the amount of sold books is not the expected one and we can't cover all the expenses of opening a brand new cultural business.

What we will do with the donations

  • We are setting up this crowdfunding campaign to be able to pay the debt to the distributors and allow us to keep this cultural project running. A bookshop needs a constant renewal of it's stock and without this, the bookshop became a book storage.
  • We also want to use the money collected in the crowdfund to improve the shopping experience in our website, for this we need to upgrade our website to a pro package on our platform. This will allow us to follow up and provide a better customer service.
  • We want to carry on organising talks and online events, but for this we need the funding to pay the writers and editors for their time in the events. Also to pay for the technician who make the life events possible. And to pay to the translator who with her translations make the talks more accessible to non Spanish speakers.
