Rodwell Trail Tunnel Mural Project
Not quite
Unfortunately this project was not successful.

The Rodwell Trail tunnel is 47.3m long and 6.2m high, it is an enormous canvas itching for something good to happen to it.

WHO ARE WE? - We’re Revolting Artists!

Revolting Artists is a loose and evolving collective of urban and subversive artists from around the UK, and further-a-field, who produce work in a variety of disciplines including graphic design, painting, public art, murals, performance poetry, photography and music.

Our mission is to create a grass roots art scene in Weymouth whilst shining a spotlight on local and international artists whose work embodies social commentary or has a subversive edge. The dream is to put Weymouth on the alternative culture map!

Revolting Artists Ltd is a registered not for profit company, with all profit being put back into ongoing cultural events based in Weymouth.

THE PROBLEM

The Rodwell Trail tunnel is 47.3m long and 6.2m high. It is currently covered in tags and crudely drawn offensive doodles. Figures indicate that over a million people travel along the Rodwell Trail each year and whilst some of those amateurishly penned ‘works or art’ would probably be at home under the “Revolting Artists” banner we feel the tunnel could be decorated in a way that would be more appealing to most.

THE SOLUTION

Revolting Artists have been granted permission to paint the tunnel, with the idea of holding an annual event there. In July (Date TBC) we’ll facilitate our first “paint jam” complete with musicians and delicious community BBQ. All we need is £3000.00 and you can join us for a burger and a little dance and watch the paintings unfold.

WHO WILL PAINT THE TUNNEL?

We’ll be inviting at least 10 artists to participate and collaborate… One of Revolting Artists aims is to create a sustainable grass roots alternative art scene with the objective of elevating local artists, by platforming them next to already recognised national artists (some of whom are local). We need to celebrate and nurture our home grown talent, but also bring people in so that Weymouth becomes a recognised hotspot for alternative art.

HOW WILL WE SPEND YOUR MONEY?

Paint is expensive and the tunnel is BIG!, this will be the majority of our expenses. We also believe artists should be paid fairly for their travel, time and talent, we’ll also need to find a little B&B for some of them to stay in whilst here… For the paint jam to be a fun day for all, we will also need to hire a little sound-system and pay DJ’s and performers for their time. Some of the funds will be set aside to ensure that throughout the year the tunnel always has high-quality paintings in it.

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

Not all artists like the confines of an art gallery, so if you’d like to see a sea of colour in the Rodwell Trail tunnel, you know what to do…
