We are in need of urgent financial support to continue our important work in dance touring, community engagement and artist development.

 New stretch target

Additional funds raised towards our stretch target will directly contribute towards artist costs for our community workshops and performances in secondary schools and care homes across the South West of England.

The resource of public funding for the arts has reduced to crippling levels in the UK and our organisation has been pushed to an urgent breaking point. Despite our strong momentum in providing community experiences for large groups of people aged 12-95 across the South West, our passionate successes in touring work to regional audiences for the past 11 years and our all encompassing and proactive support for early career artists, multiple unsuccessful applications to Arts Council England over the last four months, combined with the increased impact of inflation on an under funded cultural sector have placed our company’s future in urgent risk. We have been proactive and continuously passionate in doing our upmost to secure additional funding for our work and this Crowdfunder is an influential part in securing our future.

Who We Are Appealing To

We are appealing for donations from any who have means and interest in supporting our work in dance touring, community participation, and artist development. Richard Chappell Dance is passionate about providing free experiences for people to engage with our work, with a proactive drive in reducing financial access barriers for people in the UK to engage with dance - the art form we believe in. We are seeking support from those that have a financial ability to do so without causing or contributing towards any form of financial hardship to themselves. 2024 is a challenging time for many and, after many years of support from public funders, we wish to continue to offer subsidised dance activity to people who experience economic disadvantage. If you are unable to contribute financially, we would be immensely grateful if you could share this Crowdfunder online with your networks, to support our continued not for profit operations.

What Your Support Would Contribute Towards

We passionately believe in the positive ways that our work enriches people’s lives that we engage with, whether they be community workshop participants, our audiences or freelance artists. Donations from this Crowdfunder will directly help keep our company operating in the most challenging time in our history. All funds donated will support our work in the following areas:

-The commissioning of three early career South West based choreographers in 2025 through a second round of our programme Supporting Acts from January-September 2025

-The continued employment of our freelance dance ensemble and collaborators to reach audiences across the UK in-between September 2024 and May 2025

-A unique climate education and community choreography initiative for local people to Devon in summer 2025, led by Richard Chappell Dance and climate activists and scientists from the Global Systems Institute

-A unique performance programme to 10-20 care homes and secondary schools across the South West of England, where our work will be performed to students and care home residents and staff.

“Exquisite, energetic, entertaining, empowering… I was truly transported to another place. Real truth and beauty in the movement and music - packed a punch and I felt I could relate to the ‘stories’. Fabulous lighting felt like we were part of the party! Congratulations one and all.”

-2024 Audience Feedback

“Gave me chills. Was an incredibly watch. Was captivated every second. Astonishing dancing, light, music, choreography. Feel very privileged to have witnessed such a moving performance. Thank you.”

-2024 Audience Feedback

-2023 Audience Feedback

“As an almost 91year old member of “Step-in-Time” a local group designed to keep “oldies” active and involved, I have to bring to notice the enormous effect Silence Between Waves” had on so many people of varied ability in this area. I feel enormously privileged to have been invited to take part in an event so incredibly promoted and choreographed, bringing together groups of the less-able and extremely able - namely the wonderful lead dancers from Singapore. The whole event had both audience and performers exhilarating in the feeling of togetherness and yes - I can presume to say it - healing and supreme gratitude for what we have, here and now. Unforgettable.”

- Elizabeth Janis, Community Cast Member Silence Between Waves

“I have felt greatly supported by RCD. The company held a belief in me and have allowed me to explore my creative process and facilitate a space for me to learn more about that environment. Mentoring sessions through this time also really enhanced my practice through offering advice, for me to reflect upon, which have proved really useful. It gave me the confidence to explore more deeply the possibility of myself as a choreographer, and as a result has led me to successfully apply for commissions and choreographic opportunities I would not have before.

Support in kind studio space organised which was incredibly helpful for the creative process. Performing at Swindon Dance to share the work in progress was a really positive experience, as this was my first time sharing self-choreographed work in a professional environment. Having time with Richard’s dramaturg Neus after she watched the tech run was really insightful and beneficial for informing future developments of the work. The current performance and choreographic opportunities I have secured would not have emerged without being a part of the programme.”
