Hair pulling affects more people than the records show. 1-3% of the population report doing it but many more never report it out of shame and embarrassment. It can blight people's lives by leaving bald patches that make people fear social situations and from leading a full life. However, more research is going towards this as marked by a recent Oxford Conference dedicated to this. My research wishes to understand the circumstances and social situations in which this behaviour emerges (e.g. high social tension and anxiety) and the role of hair pulling in reducing stress despite the damage to the individual's social confidence. It is a long time dream to be able to do this kind of research but I am appealing for help to cover some of my fees. I will update all donators with research findings and of papers that are published. I am also happy to respond to people informally who have the disorder if they wish to describe their own hair pulling behaviour and circumstances. This is a six year part-time study degree so it will be a long road and any help will be appreciated.
