My name is James lovatt and I have an extensive background working in the animal health market with both pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products. I have a strong passion for sport with my personal persuits being in equestrianism, focusing mostly showjumping and dressage. I am also a keen football fan and in the past enjoyed playing rugby and continue to engage in outdoor activity such as hiking.
I developed an obsession with bone health when trying to explore ways to prevent racehorses fracturing bones. I quickly came to realise that the issues that cause horses to develop bone injuries are also common in human sport. Through my research I discovered this formulation which is already successful in other markets and saw that it could be applied to sport and improve the performance health and wellbeing of active individuals.
It is always shocking when we see elite athletes experience catastrophic fractures in their pursuit of success, often such injuries can be career ending but at best will lead to an extended period of rest, recovery, and rehabilitation. The truth is however that many of these injuries can be avoided and that in many cases if the athlete were to be x-rayed prior to the fracture, multiple stress fractures will have been noticed and as a result this would mean the bone was weakened.
The repetitive impact of sport exerts stress on bones causing them to weaken, the body will make every effort to maintain and repair bone integrity but at some point (which can vary from person to person) the ability for the bone to repair against the trauma caused by activity will fall into deficit leading to stress fractures and reduced bone density.
What is the solution?
Currently the solution is rest, but there are many reasons you may be reluctant to do this, such as the importance of exercise on mental health, pressure to maintain a place in a team, preparation for upcoming sporting event.
Current supplements for bone health focus on calcium, however most people receive enough of the calcium required in their normal diet (adult 700mg) through dairy, greens, fish, fruits, nuts, and seeds. The issue is not intake of calcium, it is how the calcium is incorporated into the bone.
What is the alternative?
We need to look at bone synthesis and bone mineralisatioin focusing on the components that may be lacking in a normal diet.
Introducing Silicon
Silicon, the third most abundant trace element in the human body, is present in all healthy tissues of people. It is especially strongly associated with connective tissues, as it has shown to participate in bone development, collagen formation and mineralization of bone matrix.
Silicon can be found in many foods such as beans, fruits, and grains but bioavailability is poor, this is due to the large polymeric structures of the silicon present in the food (up to 5% mean absorption) and in many supplements (closest competitor 31.7% mean absorption). What is the evidence?
In a study carried out by Arpino L et al ion 2023 which included 50 Patients with traumatic vertebral fractures. All patients received spinal orthoses for three months and painkillers on demand. They were divided into two groups: a group of patients for Recotect formulation treatment and a control group without supplementation.
BONE CONSOLIDATION: After 2 months, patients underwent follow-up magnetic resonance imaging to assess resolution of cancellous bone edema and to decide whether early removal of the orthosis affecting their quality of life was feasible.
RESULT: Early removal of orthoses was possible after 2 months, in 84.62% of patients taking the Recotect formulation versus 15.38% of the control group.
CONCLUSION: The use of the Recotect formulation combination of ingredients has shown a significant role in supporting the healing process of minor vertebral fractures and in promoting post-traumatic bone turnover such as the resolution of bone edema on magnetic resonance. Thanks to early removal of the orthosis, patients have improved their quality of life and reduced the likelihood of adverse effects and complications due to prolonged immobilization.
