Our Story: Re-engage

As we age, many of us find our social circles shrinking, leaving us with fewer people to turn to. Imagine reaching a point in life where you feel entirely alone. At Re-engage, we’re here to make sure no one over the age of 75 faces loneliness alone.

Founded in 1965 by Trevor Lyttleton, MBE, who was moved to action after helping an elderly neighbour in London, Re-engage has grown into a national charity dedicated to tackling social isolation. Trevor's simple act of kindness—inviting older people to tea—has evolved into a range of services that continue to grow each year.

Today, nearly 9,000 volunteers support 7,000 older people through our tea parties, call companions, and activity groups, helping them rebuild social connections and rediscover the joys of friendship and companionship. Our volunteers are the heart of what we do, creating meaningful experiences through face-to-face gatherings and weekly chats over the phone.

What We Do

Tea Parties

Our monthly tea parties bring together people over 75 for an afternoon of laughter, conversation, and connection with volunteers of all ages. These gatherings provide something to look forward to and create lasting friendships.

Call Companions

Our telephone befriending service ensures older people never feel cut off from the outside world. With a regular chat, call companions offer emotional support and meaningful conversation.

Activity Groups

In locations like Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, and beyond, our activity groups encourage gentle exercise while fostering connections. Whether online or in person, these groups offer a safe space to meet others and stay active.

Christmas Call Companions

During December, our Christmas call companions service gives older people a weekly chat, bringing warmth and companionship during what can be a challenging time for those living alone.
