 New stretch target

If we received more money, we could plant more diverse trees, offer more community events and bring more people interested in sustainability together! If extra funds are raised, we would plant trees in other parks across central Manchester.

Platt Fields Park is a popular park located in South Manchester, next to the areas of Fallowfield and Rusholme.

The genesis of the project came about by a group of students from the University of Manchester who are passionate about the park and wanted to give back. We have already been successful in creating a fantastic tree planting community event in March 2024, and planted 13 semi-mature trees. This was a mix of Adler, Beech, Horse Chestnut and Field Maple.

We received an incredible £1700 sustainability grant from the University of Manchester Students' Union to fund this project. 1712247875_screenshot_2024-03-17_183636.png

We are keen to repeat the success of the first planting event. This time with a focus on rare native UK trees including the majestic Black Poplar (of which there are only 7000 left!) and elusive Wild Service Tree. We would like to create a habitat for these trees in our beloved park for all to enjoy.

The money will go towards purchasing these trees, funding the community event and reserving some of the proceeds for long-term maintenance of the trees (such as watering, pruning and sundries).

The tree planting is planned for the next tree planting cycle, which is in November/December 2024.

This project is in collaboration between a group of students from the University of Manchester and the Friends of Platt Fields, who are a local community group also passionate about the park. We will be working with the Friends of Platt Fields community group to assist with tree planning and planting, but the fundraiser was independently created by the UoM students.

A partial grant was kindly made available through a second round of funding from University of Manchester Students' Union.
