Mental health can affect anyone at any time and the road back to mental wellbeing can be a long one. We recognise this and do not limit the number of sessions provided to a client so for clients with debilitating mental health issues, we walk the recovery journey with them until they are in a place of wellbeing.
The clients we support include those that require prolonged support for a variety of presenting issues, most commonly depression or anxiety often underpinned by childhood trauma, which includes physical, sexual and emotional abuse, domestic abuse, rape and sequential multiple traumas, for example, assault (physical and sexual) on a background of emotional deprivation, loss of various kinds, clients with suicidal ideation and previous suicide attempts as well as complex traumatic bereavements which including supporting clients who have experienced multiple deaths, or loss by suicide or murder. We provide support within Cornton Vale and Addiewell prisons. In addition to this, we deliver a variety of training workshops to a number of agencies, churches and their volunteers.
We have a long-standing presence in the community and our service is in constant demand with many of our referrals coming from GP surgeries, mental health teams, other healthcare professionals, social services, helping agencies, word of mouth, local churches, as well as self-referrals via our website. In the last three years the pandemic, national lockdown, international unrest, and the current cost of living crisis mean that the need for a service such as ours remains constant and we do what we can to relieve some of the pressure on local services.
We have two part time members of staff; Practice Manager (Client assessment & allocation, Volunteer Recruitment, training & supervision) and Office Administrator (all essential administration, fundraising, data & statistical analysis) who between them provide the means necessary to maintain the running of Quiet Waters, with the support of 6 Trustees who form our Board of Directors. All our counsellors are volunteers, and we currently have 6 operating with us, 1 of which is a student on placement. As part of the student placement, they are supervised by our Practice Manager. All of our volunteer counsellors are trained to diploma level or equivalent and are members of an appropriate professional body, Counselling and Psychotherapy in Scotland (COSCA), British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), Association of Christian Counsellors (ACC). As an organisation we are affiliated to the BACP and work within its ethical framework.
Our volunteers are from a variety of social, cultural, and national backgrounds with a range of working skills and experience thus reflecting an authentic diversity within our volunteer base. All of our volunteers extend kindness, compassion, as well as believing in recovery and empowering clients on their road to wellbeing.
