Aim: Farasutung Community Forest is an amazing project that protects & enhances a diverse range of habitats close to the river Gambia River.
On an amazing trip in January 2025 to The Gambia I met with some fantastic local guides who showed me the natural spectacles of this vastly biodiverse region.
I was amazed to see the way that local people both valued and relied on ecotourism to support themselves and their families.
However these areas are under threat from development, illegal logging and climate change.
Farasutung Community Forest group is just one of many who are trying to protect these precious areas which allow them to make a living and protect the environment.
My guide, Yanks Manneh is on the committee of the group and they have ambitious plans to;
- Improve the habitat through tree planting
- Protect the area from threats such as illegal logging,
- Train up more guides giving young people a viable career
- Enhance their facilities to have simple things like clean water and toilets.
- Buy, and safely store tools for maintenance of paths and wildlife watching facilities.
- Buy binoculars, bird and wildlife books to help new guides get started on their journey to becoming a guide.
Moreover the work needs to begin now as soon it will be rainy season which makes things much more difficult.
Due to fluctuations in prices now is a good time to buy the raw materials for building facilities.
I have set up this Crowdfunder to give a helping hand to a fantastic group of nature loving people that care for their community and country, with a fantastic vision for an economy that has nature at its heart.
