The Cause

When I was 12, my spine crushed my Spinal Cord, leaving me with a T5/6 Spinal Cord Injury - the pressure of my severe Kyphosis being the cause.

The Back-Up Trust got in touch with me soonish after but at that point I wasn’t ready to use their services, nor was I well enough. I had to focus on “getting better” and deal with the emotions that came with a life changing injury.

It was until I was 15 I used their services and went on their Multi Activity Course in the Lake District. It was life changing for me, I gained independence, I did activities I never thought I’d do (e.g. kayaking, horse riding, I even wheeled up a mountain!!).

I was also lucky enough to be assigned a mentor, somebody I could talk to in a similar position which really helped - it was nice to have somebody who understood what I was dealing with.
