The Cause

I am running for me, but primarily I'm doing it for Empower.

Empower is a unique, non-profit company. They offer a range of services which they make available to ALL women regardless of circumstances, with the goal getting women back to themselves (and even stronger). Empower is all about Women Supporting Women!!

They helped me a lot personally. Here's my story..

I gave birth to my beautiful boy just over 20 months ago. I didn't have a traumatic birth, but I was in labour on my back for a good few hours and combined with a episiotomy this impacted my pelvic floor muscles heavily. I felt fine, I was walking around, going for regular outdoor walks and I was healing nicely (or so I thought). 2 months had passed and I felt confident to do a little 5K. I was quite naive to think I could exercise so quickly after giving birth. I knew I wouldn't be able to do a long run like I was doing before pregnancy but I didn't realise the damage I could potentially do to myself and how I could increase the risk of having a prolapse. I knew something wasn't right after coming back from my run so spoke to my health visitor and she pointed me to 'Empower'. It turns out I had stress incontinence and my stomach muscles weren't fully fused back together. I've always had great bladder control but now I wasn't able to hold my toilet to run upstairs. I joined the 6 week course, alongside self referring myself to the physiotherapist and was becoming stronger and was given the thumbs up 6 months later to steady myself into running again so I have took on this challenge for motivation.

Women are incredible and we need to empower each other and celebrate each other for the small milestones we achieve and not think it's too late to help post natal issues.
