To reduce the amount of clothes going into landfill by collecting preloved school uniform & promote wearing preloved to help the environment
by Inga Murray in Manchester, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom
Children grow so quickly that perfectly decent school uniform is often thrown away as even charity shops and clothing recycling schemes won’t accept uniform items. These perfectly good clothes are becoming unnecessary landfill which harms our environment. We ran a pilot scheme and found that a good number of parents were happy to donate outgrown or unwanted uniform, school shoes, PE kit and trainers, but to make the availability of 2nd hand uniform permanent we need sufficient storage facilities and environmental education to encourage all families to donate. to implement long term sustainability we will need a storage shed where we can have shelving and plastic storage boxes to keep the clothing easily accessible, clean and dust free. Volunteers will sell items at a greatly reduced price, because everybody loves a bargain! and financially struggling families can be gifted uniform. Once uniform becomes too tatty to wear we will recycle them to be used in our art department as clothing protection when painting or rags for crafting, giving those textiles another life.
We will educate the children to be proud of helping the environment by wearing 2nd hand clothing, we plan to have children create posters either encouraging families to donate uniform or children to be more environmentally friendly by wearing 2nd hand. We will also educate families with the figures related to the environmental impact of clothing production and clothing in landfill.
