I'm opening a pottery in Redruth to run courses and taster sessions in throwing and hand building. Also to hire supervised studio membership

I’m Sarah Sullivan. I came to Cornwall to study ceramics for 3 years at Falmouth Art College in 1995 and I’m still here. I’d previously done 2 years training in Norfolk.
Since living in Cornwall, as well as being a potter, I also worked in libraries, Falmouth Marine School and Falmouth Uni. I went back to full time making ceramics in 2022. It is now my full-time business.
I’ve been making from my small studio space at home, teaching 1 to 1 throwing, and hiring halls locally to teach hand building with clay. It’s a lot of lugging around. I’ve been looking for workshop space for a while and now I have found one in REDRUTH!! It has the added bonus of being right in the heart of the town in Fore Street and also big window space for a small gallery selling the work of local makers.
I am passionate about all things clay. Being creative is not just fun, it is also very good for you.
What’s this crowdfunder for? What are the rewards for my donation?
What courses will the pottery be running?
Crowdfunder – The crowdfunder is primarily to purchase extra pottery wheels for teaching, refurbishing a 3 phase kiln and more tools .
Throwing a pot is – to start with, quite hilarious and tricky. Certainly very messy. But when you start to master the skill, it is just the most amazing thing to do. To be able to create something from mud that can be refined, fired, glazed and gloss fired – and then used!!! It really is one of the most joyful things in life. And to learn with friends/family is great fun.
I’ll also be installing kilns in the back of the workshop and will need to get them serviced so that they are safe and in full working order for firing all the lovely creations being made. I’ll need to extend the 3 phase power supply to have the kilns away from the main workshop area.
The kilns will also be available for makers in the local community to hire space in, to fire their own work. I’ll do this for them.
REWARDS!!!!
For your donation there are rewards for you to choose from:
Beautiful handmade pots, courses, course discounts, memberships, private group sessions, commissions, taster sessions, couples/’friends that lunch’ throwing sessions and even naming a pottery wheel or kiln – there will be a plaque made specially for that.
Your donation can pre-book a course for you to take within 12 months or as a gift for someone. You can ‘pay forward’ to donate a place for someone else in the community to take up a lesson….
As you can probably imagine, setting up a pottery studio for teaching is costly. There are other items of equipment that I might need at a later date, but for now I’m putting all that I have into this venture.
I look forward to being part of the community in Redruth as it thrives.
I will be using local traders for fitting out the studio and gallery space, buying from UK suppliers and showing the work of quality local makers.
Your crowdfunding pledge will make this happen.
