Poetic Unity is a Black-led charity that provides spaces for learning, expression and joy through poetry. Based in Brixton, Poetic Unity offers a service by the community, for the community, predominantly supporting young people of Black and mixed-Black heritage, aged 10-30. Our work centres the needs and experiences of the young people we support, recognising poetry as a therapeutic tool that unites and heals communities, celebrates identity and challenges injustice.

Poetic Unity is a Brixton-based charity that provides support and services to children and young people aged 10-30 across the UK. We use poetry as a tool to support young people’s mental health, education, personal development, physical health and community cohesion.
Founded in 2015, Poetic Unity has since reached over 40,000 engagements across 1,421 service provisions. Although open to all, Poetic Unity particularly supports Black and mixed-Black heritage young people, recognising their need for safe, inclusive and accessible spaces that exist ‘by and for’ their nuanced needs and experiences. From Brixton to the world, Poetic Unity has also established international partnerships, including work with organisations in Canada and Los Angeles.

Through targeted education, employment, social justice and mental health support, we are transforming spaces of harm to be spaces of healing and development. By using poetry as a tool for change and transformation, we ensure that young people have access to safe spaces that centre joy, connection and creative expression.
To do this, we offer:
- regular poetry events, including Brixton's first staple poetry night running twice a month at Black Cultural Archives, monthly poetry events at The Orange Room and performance spaces for young artists in partnership with Theatre Peckham
- Mental health group learning spaces for young people seeking community, safety and support
- Education-based programmes for young people to engage them in poetry as a tool to navigate their identity, health and experiences
- Spaces to increase physical wellness
