Young people with cancer struggle to travel to hospital. We’re on a mission to change that.
Today in the UK, 12 mums and dads will receive the news no parent ever wants to hear – your child has cancer. Eight of them will need to travel far for treatment.
Only 19 hospitals in the UK are best prepared to diagnose and treat young people with cancer. Their only choice is to travel for treatment.
In the East of England, the average round trip is 90 miles and almost 130 in Cornwall. But, as research shows, many children have to travel hundreds of miles to access specialised treatment.
Families with no access to a car have to rely on the kindness of friends or relatives. Others have no choice but to take public transport, which can be dangerous for children with compromised immune systems.
On average, a family needs nearly £200 a month just to pay for travel. In the vast majority of cases, travel costs aren’t covered by the NHS.
Young people with cancer, and the families who love them, deserve a better way.
We help them by eliminating the stresses and costs of travelling to lifesaving treatment.
With your support, we’re working to establish a dedicated transport service to help them get to and from their hospital appointments.
