Unfortunately this project was not successful.

Our vision is to be an all-inclusive theatre group, open to those of faith and none, working in the community and telling the Easter Story.

Passion Play Bishop Auckland (PPBA) was conceived as an idea in 2017 following a visit to the Wintershall production in Trafalgar Square. The plan was refined and consolidated in 2019 after Bishop Auckland Fellowship of Christian Churches performed scenes from a passion play on Good Friday.

Our Vision is to use theatre to engage our community, giving purpose, skills and confidence to many on the margins of society so they can grow and flourish. We will deliver our Mission by being all-inclusive, open to those of faith and none and representing the whole community by discovering the Easter Story and the Passion of Christ through theatrical performance and skill sharing.

As such, the approach is in the spirit of bringing new life and vitality to Bishop Auckland as it goes through its regeneration and revealing, like that of Christ on Easter Sunday. We want to use theatre to engage members of the community in telling the Easter Story, in doing so, give purpose to many who are on the margins of society, helping them gain skills and confidence that can help them grow and flourish in our community.

The team comprises a cast of 71 amateur actors and extras supported by more than 65 volunteers.

Our first performance was in 2022, following two years lost due to COVID. The performance was enjoyed by nearly 1,100 people attending over two performances, with another 5000 people watching the live stream. In 2023 we hope to grow that number to achieve 1000 people at each of the two performances and more than 8,000 online.

The performance called ‘All Will Be Revealed is a 1hr 40-minute outdoor theatre production performed twice on Good Friday at 12 noon and 3 pm.

PPBA has created professional large-scale and minor props for the performance, as well as more than 100 sets of costumes. The 2022 performances gained high praise for the production, sets, props and costumes. The performance is staged in a large open-air space in the town centre, surrounded by and incorporating the audience as it unfolds.

Key to the success of the performance is the use of professional sound reinforcement and radio mics. To achieve that in 2022 a professional sound company was used. As PPBA develops, we want to gain in-house capabilities with sound and invest in skills and equipment to be self-sufficient and teach those skills to young people.

Money raised through this crowdfunding project will be directly used to offset the cost of this large-scale production, allowing us to work with cast and volunteers throughout the year to develop the skills and confidence needed to bring the performance to life.
