To help out those in Oldham who are struggling financially, mentally and/or in general need due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

by Abid Hussain in Oldham, England, United Kingdom

Oldham Greenhill Community Sports and Recreational Club was forced to close our doors to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Primarily as an organisation we deliver activities from our base in the Alexandra Ward in Oldham, which is one of the most challenging, deprived and disadvantage areas with a high unemployment rate and increased health issues in the BAME communities. Like many other organisations we had to adapt during the pandemic and realign our organisational philosophies and it was decided that the main philosophy of the organisation is the "COMMUNITY".

On the back of this the organisation set up two important projects in order to help our members and the broaden community in March 2020 and we have reached the stage where we need more revenue to continue this work. First of all was our Befriending Service in which over 225 families have reached out to us sorting help on a number of different issues whether it has been simple things like vocal and emotional support as a voice in the public domain, keeping a roof over their heads, assistance with basic food shopping whether it is the case of shielding or lack of finances or even searching for financial aid due to the loss of jobs or furlough with the household amongst others. Our Befriending Service has become a vital tool for the community and is necessary to continue for the sanity of the local people. The second project we have undertaken is our Food Parcel Service, which has helped around 50 families of all races and ethnic backgrounds and is climbing week by week as the toll of COVID-19 deepens as low income jobs continue to be lost and people are told to continue to shield until at least the 31st March 2021. This service has become essential as people rely on it, as finances in these groups have been allowed to stretch to other areas such as housing and bills.

Our army of staff and volunteers continue to help to deliver the services, however with the project due to end soon we need all the help to keep this wonderful project running. As a group we feel obliged to continue for the sake of the people of Oldham and help whatever way possible to end food poverty. So far we have partnered with number of different organisations and local councillors Aftab, Mushtaq and Harrison in order to get this off the ground. But now we need more help and we reach to you the wider community to help continue on our journey. So please if you have any spare cash please donate so we can pride in serving our community and reach out to other families who are in need and are yet to contact us. There are many out there who need your help so please DONATE to our worthy cause!!! Thank You in advance for your kind donations.

PS If you are looking to contribute in any other way whether it is volunteering or donating food or any other resources, please contact us at [email protected].
