My name is Jane Mullins. I work around Worcestershire as a Child Protection Social Worker. Earlier this year I visited Bali as a solo traveller and whilst I was lucky enough to be able to afford to stay in clean, lovely places in beautiful locations I was also made aware of the extreme poverty that exists just a short distance from these tourist hotspots. The local people who I was fortunate enough to make contact with were some of the kindest, gentlest, genuine people I have ever met.
Indonesia has the fifth largest concentration of poor people in the world. The tiny, largely Hindi island of Bali has well over 200,000 people living on less than £1.50 a day. The island is still recovering from the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic when the halting of the tourism industry had a devastating impact on locals forcing them even deeper into poverty.
I researched extensively to find a Balinese charity that I could trust, that was genuine and that I could help. I was put in touch with a community led charity called Komunitas Satu Hati (which in English translates to One Heart Community) and now donate monthly to them.
Komunitas Satu Hati is a community of kind, local Balinese people who provide their time and services free of charge. Many have full time jobs. No expenses are claimed All money raised is given directly to those in need. They are all simply stars 🌟.
Komunitas Satu Hati support the poorest people in Bali, helping them to build homes, to access health care, to build sanitation and to help their children to access education. They also help children who have lost both of their parents, who are cared for by neighbours or family relatives and who live in extreme poverty. Many of these children struggle to access education, often due to transport issues, due to their rural locations. Komunitas Satu Hati have a sponsoring system whereby people can give monthly donations to these children, helping to provide them with items such as basic clothing, groceries, school clothes, school books and transport to and from school.
Komunitas Satu Hati has recently fund raised and helped build a home for an elderly man whose home was destroyed by numerous landslides 👇⭐️👇
Another successful project has been raising funds for a young child with hydrocephalus (for him to have a replacement shunt fitted to release fluid from his brain). The little boy had the procedure necessary in June and is now thriving.
The project has recently helped a lady with terminal cancer by providing her with a wheelchair as well as with groceries and provisions.
This past weekend (27/28th July) the Komunitas Satu Hati community have been working hard to re-build homes for 4 different families in the rural areas of Sideman, Bebandem and Karangasem. 👇👇👇. They sent me this picture yesterday ❤️
Aim
Our aim is to raise £2000 to help 20 families over 6 months (£100 per family each month) who are living in some of the poorest rural communities in Bali.
The money will go directly to each family. Each month, each family will be given approximately £16 worth of groceries, clothing (including - for their children - school uniform, school shoes etc.) as well as resources that can help their children with their education.
