ON TRACK FOUNDATION

The On Track Foundation is a UK based charity of which purpose is to promote wildlife conservation and engage with projects that protect threatened species. The Foundation is running the Ingwe Leopard Research for over 10 years in South Africa. The primary focus of the research is to continue developing a collaborative network of reserves, lodges, citizen scientists and other partners who are collecting data on leopards. The data form part of a national monitoring program that will provide information to the relevant authorities in order to implement best management practices.

Quick facts about the most iconic of the big cats

- Leopards live in a multitude of environments in different parts of the world. It is the most adaptable of all the big cat species.

- Leopards are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Their population is declining.

- Leopards have disappeared from 67% of their historic range in South Africa.

- 63% of suitable leopard habitats are outside protected areas.

- The main threats are habitat fragmentation, poaching for their skins, snares (wire traps), human-wildlife conflict and illegal killings.

With your support, we will:

- Expand our collaborative network to over 30 nature reserves participating to the research, ensure safe leopard movements through the creation of ecological corridors and the regular removal of deadly traps.

- Engage the public in wildlife conservation through citizen science by using photographs taken and artificial intelligence to identify at least a 100 leopards.

- Contribute to the national monitoring program, publish research findings and share results with relevant authorities to promote effective conservation practices and reduce human-leopard conflicts

- 20 reserves already participating to the research covering 160,000ha (1600km2)

- 2000+ leopard photographs submitted on the AI platform for individual identification

- The On Track Foundation the first contributor for leopard images in South Africa.

- 900+ sightings of leopards recorded
