North Tawton RFC Solar Panel project

Who are we?..

North Tawton RFC is community asset sport club that has been part of our local community since 1885. We run mini and junior teams up to Under 10s and adult men’s sides throughout the months during the season. Many other community groups make use of our facilities and pitches and we are proud to be part of our great community.

Our Community..

The club is proud to be home of the North Tawton Scouts (Squirrels) who use the grounds to teach valuable skills to the scouts. Other local groups make use of the facilities including the woman’s institute, Zumba, local council and Ta Chii who are all part of the NTRFC family and of course our playing and non playing members who make up North Tawton Rugby Club

What are we trying to achieve?

We are raising funds towards the installation of solar panels on the club roof with batteries to help improve the energy efficiency of the club and reduce costs for the next 25 years. This in turn will help keep costs lower for our members and all those that use the facilities in the community. The project will involve installing 34 PV modules (panels) generating electricity and then storing it within the batteries to be used in the evenings when the club is used most often and of course generate back to the grid. 

The first phase of the project will be to erect the scaffolding and install the solar panels along with the wiring and batteries. The second, longer term phase, will be to add extra batteries to the system allowing the club to store the electricity generated and be less reliant on other energy sources.

The Impact from Coronavirus 

Like may other clubs and businesses, the last two years of Covid restrictions and emerging from the pandemic has been tough. Opportunities to raise funds towards the solar panel project have been severely impacted in that time. In addition, the cost of living and energy price increases has only strengthened the need for the club to be less reliant on external energy. 

Now as NTRFC try to build a more positive and sustainable future, green energy and sustainable sources of energy will play a significant part to safeguard the clubs future and all those who use it

Community impact

With the installation of solar panels, North Tawton Rugby Club will be able to continue to provide a high standard of facilities and experiences for its member base and to those that hire and visit the club. With the club being able to keep on top of its energy bills, we can ensure those rents are kept low to our current hirers and also be able to provide more community led projects in the future without having to worry about the clubs energy bills, which at the moment is of concern.
