Aim: To address the need for quality and sustainable daycare services for disabled children with significant care needs in Nepal.

New Futures Nepal focuses on supporting disadvantaged children and adults in Nepal. To do this, we raise funds to support initiatives promoting health, education, and independence, with a particular focus on the social integration of children with disabilities and empowering the people of Nepal.

Many children we have supported over the years have significant care needs and need day-to-day assistance. Daycare services represent an invaluable resource in meeting these care needs. They offer respite for the parents of these children, allowing them to earn money through employment as well as get a much-needed break from their care responsibilities. They also act as important 'hubs' to share advice and form relationships with other parents in a comparable situation, reducing isolation and creating comradery. For the children, these services are essential in promoting well-being and development through education, medical care, recreational & social interaction, and home outreach.

Unfortunately, the in-country funding of these services in Nepal is lacking. As well as this, many of those who require these services have limited finances (often being of low socioeconomic status, they face the consequences of a negative societal attitude towards disability and their ability to earn money being hindered by their care responsibilities (see 'Wails within Silence video)) meaning that parental contributions are often low and have to be subsidised. As a result, these daycare services exist in a constant state of financial precariousness, often having to defer teacher and carer salary payments and operating with limited resources and inadequate transportation capabilities.

Your donations will help fund items such as (not exhaustive):

  • Teacher and carer salaries
  • Subsidies for impoverished local families
  • Resources and equipment used at care centres (including food and learning materials)
  • Building rent
  • Physiotherapists
  • Transportation (including fuel, and if enough funds available, a new vehicle(s))

Case Study - The Bhaktapur Parents Self-help Group

New Futures Nepal financially support the Bhaktapur Parents Group close to Kathmandu. The organisation is a self-help group caring for children with cerebral palsy and other neurological conditions. They provide daycare support such as educational activities (including Computer Studies), social skill & daily livelihood activities, guided self-exercise, and daily physiotherapy sessions. They also provide a home visit service where they work with the families of those affected by cerebral palsy to live as independently as they can in their own homes.

Some of the disabled residents of the Hope Centre (our home for disadvantaged children in Kathmandu) benefit hugely from facilities like the Bhaktapur Parents Group. However, they too face a constant struggle to maintain their services due to the issues previously discussed.

In the words of the group:

"At our centre, not only are disabled children getting benefits, but we are helping the guardians of these children to make daily life easier. With our support they get time to do their profession and other income generating work. We have experienced that the life of guardians is organised and easier due to the centre.

Our mission is to run a day care centre, home visit service, and empower parents. The care centre is one of the platforms for them to benefit mentally or emotionally, and it can be helpful for parents to continue being involved in the child's development and provide a supportive and nurturing environment at home.

Due to a decrease in funding, we are facing difficult conditions. Our daycare centre relies on this support for essential expenses like staff salaries, home rent, children's tiffin, and transportation. Without adequate funds, it becomes challenging to maintain these basic services, which are vital for the children's well-being and development."

The Bhaktapur Parents Group is one of many services in a comparable situation in Nepal, not only within the city of Kathmandu, but also in the more remote areas of the country. We are therefore inviting you to help us raise funds for daycare services (including the Bhaktapur Parents Group) for families with significant care needs in Nepal. These funds will ensure that robust services are available to these families and will alleviate the pressures faced by the organisations providing these services.

We thank you in advance for your generosity!
