We're still collecting donations

On the 13th April 2021 we'd raised £3,677 with 32 supporters in 83 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.

The plaster boarding of the hut is now complete.  We are fitting the kitchen and have some second fix woodwork and electrical fitting to do.  The majority of the work has been completed by a dedicated group of volunteers excellently led by our Group Scout Leader, Rob.  The penultimate building inspection was completed with no pick up points and the inspector commended us on the quality of the build and the high specification.

Building material costs have gone up significantly in last 3 years.  We have raised and spent approximately £92,000 already.

But we now need £9,000 for the electric connection and £2,000 for the water connection.  Although fundraising remains ongoing from the Group the project is likely to stall in the autumn as we run out of money.  A recent grant application for Cornwall Levelling Up funding was unsuccessful.  And further grant applications are being submitted.

The Scout Group continues to thrive with new members every month.  Everyone who visits the site is amazed at the views - out to see along the North Cornwall coastline to Dartmoor in the East.  The site is secure and sheltered and will provide an ideal campsite in the future.

Who are we?

2nd Bude (Jacobstow) Scout Group is a thriving Cornish Scout Group supporting young people from 6 to 14 years old from a predominantly rural and coastal community that sits between Launceston, Camelford and Bude.  The Group is thriving with over 50 young people and despite COVID 19 it restarted its weekly meetings in Septemeber and is now exploring Zoom meetings.

The Scouts Vision is that by 2023 we will have prepared more young people with skills for life, supported by amazing leaders delivering an inspiring programme.

We will be growing, more inclusive, shaped by young people and making a bigger impact in our communities.

What is happening?

The Group is 50 years old in 2021, and had been based in an old school pre-fabricated hut at Wainhouse Corner for the last 38 years.  The Group had to vacate this site and the old hut was beyond being moved.  On hearing of the Group's predicament local farmers Jonathan and Sally Bachelor kindly gifted the Group a plot of land just 700 metres from the old site at Wainhhouse Corner.  With the support of St Gennys Parish Council, Mr Michael Prellar (architect)(RIP) and local residents the Group secured outline planning for the hut on the new site.  With support of Stephen's Scown solicitors the Group have now secured legal tenure of the site.

The Project Plan?

The aim is to secure detail planning by March 2021 and to start the building as soon as possible to complete in 2021, the Group's 50th anniversary.

The estimated cost of the project is £85,000.  The Group have raised £43,000 already and are applying for other grants.  There are 4 phases to fundraising:

Phase 1 - Previous fundraising - £24,000 in the bank and £5,400 already spent on fees. This will fund the groundworks to floor level, this work will begin as soon as planning approval is secured.

Phase 2 - Crowdfunder Campaign and local associated grants - Target £10,000 to pay for baseline self build timber structure. (Complete we raised £21,000)

Phase 3 - Further Grant applications to large Charity support organisations - £15,000 - this will pay for roof, exterior cladding and second fix of the interior.

Phase 4 - Post lockdown fundraising events and second Crowdfunder Campaign - £10,000 to raise funds for equipment and finishing of the site.

We are hoping to reduce these costs with the support of local businesses and suppliers.

The Group have detailled quotes for groundworks and the timber frame building materials.

Wider Community Support.

The Group have been pledged numerous offers of support from local businesses and tradesmen.  It is hoped that the project will be a true Cornwall community project.
