Who are we?
West Bretton Cricket Club is a welcoming and inclusive organization open to everyone in the West Bretton, Wakefield community. Established in 1907, the club is managed entirely by dedicated volunteers and a supportive committee.
We currently field three senior cricket teams competing in the Pontefract and Barnsley Cricket Leagues and offer Junior Cricket for Under 9s. Beyond cricket, we provide football opportunities, utilizing our outfield for training and matches when the weather permits.
In 2021, we introduced a Senior Football Team, which has already won two cup competitions. We've also established a new junior football setup with teams across various age groups. Excitingly, the 2024/25 season will feature our first Girls Football Team playing at Park Lane!
Our club is committed to diversity and inclusion, actively engaging with the local community to provide a safe and friendly environment for everyone. Our junior cricket and football programs are open to boys and girls of all abilities. Additionally, we regularly host parties and invite everyone to enjoy our new facilities.
Why are we crowdfunding?
We have invested significant time and money in recent years to renovate our facilities, creating a welcoming and enjoyable space for everyone. Our social and community area, essential for hosting functions, has been upgraded, and we have successfully rebuilt our Clubhouse and associated amenities for the community's enjoyment.
These improvements, however, come at a cost. To maintain our field for year-round sports, we need to upgrade our mower.
We are launching this crowdfunding campaign to:
- Replace our main field mower, which is ready for a well-deserved retirement after many hours of service. We need the right equipment to keep our field in top condition all year round.
We believe that this upgrade will allow more people to participate in sports at West Bretton, now the proud home of the West Bretton Junior FC Girls U9 team.
How we’ll spend the money raised
Simply, we shall replace our Mower with a fit for purpose, more modern (potentially new) machine! This shall fulfil and enable our commitment to all year inclusive sport at Bretton.
Community impact
We are an inclusive Club with an access for all equity policy. We are particularly proud of the number of local residents who are members of the club, which goes someway to highlight the lack of provision for sports related activities in the area. We are a community club, one that looks after each other which is in the heart of the community. We provide a sports field, social facilities, bar and venue rooms for residents to hire and other social occasions as well for schools and the charities who can use the facilities within the club free of charge. There are also areas of lower income families/deprivation locally around Wakefield and as such we ensure that our activities don’t provide a barrier by being open to all.
We are an important club within the community; proving a place to meet for residents and community groups. Located at the heart of the community/village; facilities are used by different organisations throughout the year; these include: School; community groups; events; community open days; weddings; birthday parties and meetings.
West Bretton Cricket Club is located in a small village within West Yorkshire which has a become a popular residence for families, alongside an aging population for those that have lived in the village for a number of years. As such the local cricket club has become an important recreational centre for both those living in or just outside the village. The club also caters well for the whole community and the older members of the community who enjoy coming down and watching the cricket.
Our club has very strong links with both the immediate and wider communities of West and South Yorkshire. Our facilities are already used by a large variety of people, whether they are used for sports such as Cricket and Football, or other activities such as parties, after school clubs or holiday clubs.
We have also formed close links with the Yorkshire Cricket Board and County Club, offering them the space to host representative games.
The facilities were used last year to encourage females to participate more in cricket; Yorkshire Ladies CCC used the ground for their training sessions.
