Installation of a new twin-bay non-turf cricket practice facility that complies with English Cricket Board guidelines and best practice

by Mushtaq in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Who are we?

Birkby Rose Hill Cricket Club (formerly Nuffield CC and before that YMCA CC) is located in the heart of Birkby which has a large community from the BAME minority groups. The club has been in existence since the 1920s. It currently has 4 men's adult teams playing in 3 different leagues – Huddersfield Cricket League on Saturdays and Halifax Sunday League and Quaid-e-Azam league on Sundays, a female team playing matches in the West Yorkshire Women and Girls Cricket and 3 junior teams – U11s, U13s and U15s.

Whilst the club operates an open policy to welcome people from all backgrounds and ethnicities, its current membership is overwhelmingly people from an Asian background. In Huddersfield, it is the only majority Asian club that has a successful junior setup and provides facilities for females.

Why are we crowdfunding?

There is a desperate requirement to put in place a new cricket practice nets facility as the existing facility is no longer fit for purpose or safe to use having been in place for more than 30 years. Without an adequate practice facility, none of the children or adults (male and female) can conduct any meaningful training sessions. It is imperative that the club is able to install these new practice facilities as a matter of urgency in order to continue to provide access to users of our services.

The club has already raised some funds through grants but there is a shortfall as additional costs have arisen for preparing the ground to enable the installation of the practice nets.

How we’ll spend the money raised

The proposed location for the practice nets facility is a parcel of land that is highly uneven and the club will engage the services of a groundworks company to create a level area measuring 30m by 12m.

The installation of the practice nets facility will be carried out by one of the market leaders and they have already installed such facilities within the local area and are a highly reputable company.

Cost of groundworks - Approx. £10k to £15k

Purchase and installation of new twin bay nets - £34,500

Community impact

The club is strongly committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all users of its facilities but particularly more so for children and females as a means for enjoying sport and socialising. We believe that this helps children to avoid getting involved in anti-social activities and they gain invaluable lessons in team work.

We are actively working to get more girls and women playing cricket and in the process, it will enable and encourage other ladies to come to the club and participate in activities such as walking. We hope that this will help them to become more active and provide them the  opportunity to socialise and build support networks with others from similar backgrounds.

The club works closely with other community organisations to support vulnerable people with practical help and activities to reduce loneliness and isolation. Examples include running coffee mornings, hosting public health awareness days etc.
