Aim: We are looking for funding to purchase new 'unisex' clothing for a wonderful, kind-hearted trans person who is just beginning their journey
I run a Community Interest Company in a small rural town, South Somerset. I recently had the privilege of meeting this young person ('A') and their family as there had been domestic violence in their home, and mum was seeking some support for her children. 'A' was very shy and withdrawn and had refused to engage with other agencies. However, with patience and kindness they began to attend our premises and open up about their feelings.
'A' had already taken the difficult step of 'coming out' to their family, and at school where they had the office change the register to their chosen name! Mum and their siblings are now trying hard to use the correct name and pronouns and 'A' is really proud of them for trying. While their family may not understand or believe what 'A' explains to them, by trying their best they are both respecting and validating 'A', which is important to them.
As I watch 'A' grow in confidence week-on-week, I can see how the exterior does not match the interior and would like to help remedy this. As a CIC we run to a very tight budget. We have covered the cost of a new haircut but we can not stretch any further. Unfortunately mum (now a single parent) cannot afford to buy a new set of clothing for 'A', so they are wearing more feminine styles of clothing, particularly underwear, and they have only one binder. School uniform consists of leggings and ballet-pump style shoes. Bless their heart, 'A' is very aware of the family's financial situation and never complains, but I think new clothing would be a HUGE confidence boost.
Please help us to help them!
