Nam Yang Brighton

RCN 1207778, Brighton

Our passion at Nam Yang Brighton is for each of our students to become physically and mentally healthier, happier and more confident as they develop their combat sport and martial art skills in a completely inclusive environment. Being a community lead, charity, teaching martial arts in Brighton and Hove, our diversity is something we’re extremely proud of. Our classes are suitable for everyone and anyone, all ages and backgrounds, people with disabilities, refugees and local community groups. Many of our students and families are on lower incomes which is something we specifically provide for. At Nam Yang we never turn anyone away due to financial restraints, we strive to make martial arts attainable for everyone. Nam Yang Brighton are proud to be the UK’s first Martial Arts Club of Sanctuary for our work with refugees and Asylum Seekers. We know that regular exercise and being part of a wider community of supportive and inclusive members not only benefits our members physical health but their mental health as well.

At Nam Yang we teach a wide variety of martial arts and mindfulness classes. But  we believe our impact is much more than that. By providing classes for free in a welcoming, warm and friendly environment, Nam Yang supports people to improve
their mental and physical health not only through exercise but through providing a sense of community essential to people’s confidence and social integration. Our members routinely refer to their “Nam Yang family”, and many people talk about “the magic” that this sense of belonging fosters, through deep feelings of connection to, and care for, the club and to one another, regardless of background and difference.

Nam Yang brings together people from all backgrounds, and actively encourages people to connect with and support each other and learn new skills. All of our classes are completely integrated and divided only by age. Everyone trains together: in a typical class there are refugees/asylum seekers, members with SEN, physically disabled members, LGBTQ+ members, low income families, well paid professionals, members with poor mental health and National champions all training alongside each other.

Supporting Nam Yang ensures that we can continue to offer free training to refugees, asylum seekers and low income families. We also provided subsidised memberships for emergency services staff and anyone who would struggle to pay. We never want financial restraints to be a barrier for people to train with us. Funding is also crucial to allow us to continue our work within the community, such as free school workshops, to ensure no one is left behind and has access to fitness and mindfulness training.
