Join Mr Punch as he and his friends help the wiley Serpina get her man. With appearances from Judy, The Crocodile, a Cheeky Monkey, a band of singing Policemen and a host of others, this is the perfect introduction to classical music for children (and grown up kids) of all ages. Featuring stunning operatic vocals and beautiful melodies as well as all the twists, turns, gags and the uproar of your favourite pantomimes.
See you at The Arcola Theatre 21-24th August!
We are raising funds to support our summer run of Mr Punch at the Opera, a radical reinterpretation of Pergolesi's La Serva Padrona, first workshopped in 2023 with the support of The Fenton Arts Trust and The Leche Trust. This show takes all the characters of classic Punch & Judy and explores how they tease, cajole and down-right irritate the farcical characters of Pergolesi's cheeky Baroque operetta.
The piece is sung in English with spoken English text, and, unlike most operas for children, introduces young audiences to traditional classical opera, rather than more modern, musical-theatre leaning, composition. It is performed with piano and cello, by two outstanding emerging opera artists.
We are dedicated to paying Equity rates or above, and to ensuring the highest production values possible. For these reasons, this show will cost in excess of £10,000 to produce. As this is family theatre and we have fought to keep ticket prices affordable (tickets start at £8), we cannot rely on box-office returns to support the piece. This is why we need your help.
Anything you can donate will be greatly appreciated. If you don't feel you can donate, please consider buying a ticket, either for yourself or as a present to loved ones. The gift of theatre is one of the best you can give to a child (we promise they'll have a great time!)
