Engage with additional young people from a wider range of economic and diverse backgrounds
Background
St Monicas was established more than 10 years ago and we are based in the Daisy Hill area of Newry City and have built a strong reputation for not only producing first class athletes, but also for developing respectful, caring, independent and engaged young people well into adulthood
Beyond Covid
Since we re-opened after the Covid 19 pandemic, we have worked tirelessly to re-build our club:
We have returned our membership numbers to pre covid levels
Engaged new members
Focussed on the development of our female squad
Recruited new coaches and volunteers
Introduced practical programmes for mental health, mindfulness, general well-being and the importance of maintaining a healthy and balanced diet
We continue to work with those from disadvantaged and/or minority backgrounds, including recently arrived or asylum seeking families,
We have delivered projects for children of local Travellers’ families
We also maintain our diversionary youth project for boys and girls engaged in low level criminal or anti-social behaviours
Big steps forward
In 2023, thanks to the amazing support of members, volunteers, parents, local businesses and the wider local community, our fundraising efforts meant we secured the finance to allow us to purchase our club premises.
With the ownership of our venue and an unshakeable commitment to both our members and the local community, we are now engaged in securing partnership funding to make essential upgrades and repairs to club premises. Within the next 12 months, we hope to have replaced our current roof, upgraded our heating and ventilation system and be well on our way to the completion of a ‘new build’ extension which will accommodated new changing facilities
It is about boxing, but more....
Our focus, throughout this time will remain on our young boxers and also in offering health and fitness support to local residents.
We are a boxing club, first and foremost……but we recognise the need to offer our stakeholders much more than a fantastic boxing experience. Individually and as a group, our focus is on the development of the entire person.
Even in a world of wall-to-wall social media and the ability to find answers to most concerns or questions, we still believe there is a need for wider educating and awareness raising of all.
Minding my Money
Through our Minding my Money project we will put in place a new project over the coming months offering advice and guidance to all, but essentially to young people with a strong focus on financial skills-building
This will explore and assist people in making those everyday and long term financial decision making….anything from opening a bank account, budgeting, starting your first job and understanding deductions from your salary, advice on future mortgage applications, paying bills, saving money and so forth.
As with most things in life there is usually a cost to some elements of this project. However, thanks to Aviva’s Community Fund, some of our costs will be met through this fund
How you can help
So for every one pound that is donated to our Crowdfunder appeal a further one pound will be matched by Aviva. This means that if you donate £100’ the club will receive a further £100. Aviva will match all donations, up to a maximum of £250.
So if you are feeling particularly generous, you can donate £250 and that will be worth £500 to the club
And more, If you are a UK tax-payer, you can ‘gift aid’ your donation, meaning we can claim 25% of your donation from the tax man….this means a single donation of £250 will be worth £562.50
Thank You
We fully appreciate all our supporters and your incredible generosity, and would ask that you make any size of donation.
