A General Election has been called. We need to raise at least £1000 by the end of June to pay for the election deposits that gets Mike Jelfs and Tony Deakin onto the ballot paper.
Mike was born and raised in Cosby and since 1997 has lived in Whetstone, so knows South Leicestershire very well. He has enjoyed a long and successful career as a high level Business Consultant for large retail organisations in the UK, USA and China, being particularly involved in delivering technological advancement. After seeing the impacts of climate change, pollution and social injustice first hand through his work, he realised that he needed to do more to help bring about vital changes for the better.
Mike believes that existing vacant and underused commercial and retail sites across the city should be refurbished and redeveloped into affordable housing. The current explosion in planned new housing developments in such places as Enderby, Countesthorpe and Lutterworth, due to Leicester not being able to fulfil its quota, should be challenged. Additionally, the continued construction of HGV logistics warehouses on greenfield sites, such as that in Enderby, should be reassessed based on the current needs for such properties and not on a decade old Local Plan.
Mike already campaigns for improvements in Active Travel provision and believes that all children who wish to should be able to walk or cycle to school safely. He also campaigns for improvements to Public Transport in South Leicestershire, be it greatly needed upgrading of bus services or reopening of a local train line through Blaby.
In his spare time Mike is a cricket nut and avid follower of Leicestershire Foxes. He is the unofficial "stat man" supplying the commentator during live feeds of home games. If an interesting fact is given, Mike probably found it!
Tony is a Leicester native and lifelong resident. He has lived with his family in Kirby Muxloe for 25 years, establishing a physiotherapy practice serving local people in 2001, and is passionate about the natural world and helping the local community build towards a happier, healthier, more sustainable future. Outside of family, work and local politics Tony is mad about Leicester City, being a long-time season ticket holder and having attended his first live game 50 years ago! Tony joined the Green Party in 2019, after being inspired by a friend's success at District Council elections.
He is now Co-ordinator of Blaby Green Party and a District Councillor himself, and has a particular interest in making sure that our future homes are affordable to all, secure, fully insulated and self-sustaining so as to make them as cost effective as possible. If elected he will fight to bring new green industries offering highly skilled employment into the area, and against businesses and organisations that abuse their workforce, community and environment. He will campaign hard to get fairer funding from Central Government for the people and services of Leicestershire, an area of the country that has been routinely underfunded for years. He is ready to stand and bring the Green vision to Mid Leicestershire in this election.
Mike and Tony believe in the need to bring people together to work towards common goals and provide real hope, not to engage in adversarial politics that seek only to divide, offering a constant diet of negative stories and fear mongering. As Green MP's they would work tirelessly to bring about real changes that will make life better for everyone, such as targeting investment in the NHS and Social Services, our schools and youth services, and our emergency and security services.
But we need to raise our deposit or we risk losing that Green voice.
Can you help by chipping in £20, or whatever you can afford, to get us over the line? Thousands of people across South and Mid Leicestershire have voted for the Green Party in recent elections. We are not powered by big businesses giving massive donations, we are powered by YOU, our supporters. If only 10 people donated this much we would already be 20% towards our target! But we can do better than that. Please give what you can so that Mike and Tony can represent you.
Also: Your donation could have a Triple Impact!
1. It enables Mike and Tony to be present to challenge the old, established parties.
2. By helping Mike and Tony to stand, your donation enables all the votes they receive to translate into funding for all Green MP's. This funding has been massively important in enabling the great work done by Caroline Lucas at Westminster since 2010.
3. If Mike and Tony retain their deposits by gaining enough votes, that money is returned and can be used again to keep building Green Party strength both locally and nationally. The more people see support growing the more likely they will also choose to vote Green.
Your donation can help give every resident in South Leicestershire and Mid Leicestershire the opportunity to Vote Green, and a chance for Real Hope and Real Change!
P.S. Because we're a political party
By making a donation you confirm that you are eligible to make political donations in the UK, and that this donation is not made for or on behalf of any other person. All donations received are subject to the regulations of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000. We're required to run electoral register checks from people making donations above £500, and if you donate over £1,500 during a year, we are required to let the Electoral Commission know, who will make this available on their website. Please note that your donation will go to the local Green Party managing this election campaign, not to the individual candidates themselves.
