Project title: Eagle Thread eye
Aim: To bestow upon young people the Freedom and Courage to look ahead for better future.
Project Summary
Our work will focus at reducing the over representation of Black children offenders population, including those with comorbidity issues and the vulnerable adults using digital technology (the STEAM) and Immersive activities or programmes. We will be delivering our services through both trans and multi disciplinary approach (MDS).
Our services will effectively maximise the use of our Community Mental Health services, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) using Robots, play and games schemes with Relaxation. Kingsbury & York (Kingsbury &York 2006) argued that structures for partnership with parents and agencies involved in delivering child’s mental care at their early age must be ensured, and not just in word. We will involve thoughts processing skills; formal Education programs and Goal setting exercises. Providing increased access to Jobs & Skills acquisition, Advanced and Nano Technology with increased access to creativity, new knowledge and economic opportunities. Our team-work will include professional support of Lawyers, Criminologists and Neurologists, GPs, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Community and Psychiatric Nurses, Social workers and Youth Workers, Cognitive Behaviour therapist, Occupational Therapist and Pastoral or Spiritual Care Support, with strategic use of Nutritionists and Dieticians.
Objectives
To reduce the population of young people affected negatively by court remand decisions through networking with Criminal Justice system, the Youth Offending Institutions, the Secure Training Centres and the Social Services
To support young people affected by court remands through provision for alternative accommodation which guarantees protection of their liberty
To support young people with provision for social integration and behaviour management, coaching with mentoring to enable them desist from crime
To assist these young people with prospects for court appeal in order to effect changes in their circumstances, so that their court trial is not poorly managed during their transition period from childhood to adult
Given the damaging impact of custody, to provide them with the thinking and social skills that will bestow freedom and courage require in their circumstances so they can look ahead for positive changes outcomes
To provide young offenders trapped in contact with criminal gangs safety nets by re-housing them in a new geographical area, relocating them in order to rebuild their life with access to education, training, skills development employment and economic opportunities.
Needs Assessment
From criminological studies, and statistics, failures of early detection of Children and Young People (CYP) Mental illness often result into co-morbidity of Mental Health issues among them, thus increased Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficiency Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) patients, and possibly, an over representation of Black African and Caribbean children as offenders within the Criminal Justice System when their mental health issue, the ACE (Adverse Childhood Effects) are not being detected during Early Childhood Education (ECE).
In the last three years, the likelihood of young people in the UK having a mental health problem has increased by 50%, according to the Children’s Society (NHIR 2022). In a classroom of thirty children (NHIR 2022), five are likely to have a mental health problem. In the year 2019-20, only 391,940 children in England received treatment for problems with their mental health. This is just a quarter of the more than 1.5m children estimated to need treatment (NHIR 2022). This may proportionately increase the racial disparity for Black African and Caribbean children with mental health needs, because they are disadvantaged group within the system according to survey.
Increased access to STEAM Education with Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality technology (AR & VR) and Robotic engineering experiments for children, particularly disadvantaged Black African and Caribbean children with mental health issues at early discovery of their symptoms would be innovative. Learning and play, or learning through play has been an old phenomenon effective in Children early education (Neofytou et al 2022). According to Piaget, play is a necessary vehicle for normal physical, social and cognitive development for children. It involves practice play, imaginative play, and continuing to play with set of rules. Learning through Play has been an approach used in various educational contexts for some decades now. Games have been broadly used in learning contexts. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in using games to promote learning in multiple of education, and extensive research has shown that games have significant potentials to enhance learning motivation and skills development. Children gaming such as Exergaming technology (digital gaming technology) (Neofytou et al 2022) is new where health care issues are tackled with the help of serious game, including off-shelf game console system like Sony Eye toy, Nintendo, Robots experiments, Wii games and Konami DDR. Our services will provide children using our Rehabilitation programs, and mental Health care services, access to these facilities when they are in our care and we would ensure increased ratio of Black children benefiting in terms of digital skills development.
Enabling Desistance from crime
Using Cognitive behavioural therapy, Rational Emotive behavioural therapy, and Cognitive Restructuring therapy with access to employment or economic opportunities we will support offenders and enable them to desist from crime with provision for their criminogenic needs. Stable accommodation, long term employment, good health and building better relationships programs are all required to enable desistance.
We will provide Stable accommodation and family support leading to job opportunity because they are vital particularly to prevent the inter-generational circle of offending.
