We're still collecting donations

On the 5th February 2024 we'd raised £9,977 with 13 supporters in 69 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.

Who are we? A Brief History

Melton Mowbray RFC has a long standing tradition of playing rugby in Melton and has been in existence for over 110 years, having celebrated its centenary season during 2012/13.

We are proud to boast 2 regular mens senior teams, occasional vets team, along with mini & junior teams from under 6’s to Colts and a couple of girls teams in the under 12, under 14, under 16 and under 18 age groups.

We are fortunate enough to be able to count a number of our players who have gone onto play for England youth teams, play rugby at a professional level and even regular full international caps

We take our sport seriously and currently employ a senior coach. Mike Holford joined us 2 years ago as head coach having previously played for Leicester Tigers and Wasps. Backs coach is Matt Cox, boasting a wealth of experience playing and coaching.

The social side of the club is equally important to us and we hold regular social events for all involved with the club, whether they be the seniors players, the mini junior section or the parents.

Why are we crowdfunding?

Our club is the heart of grassroots rugby in Melton Mowbray, striving to make the game accessible and affordable to all with the aim of preserving the sport in the town long into the future.

To support this goal, we are in the process of securing permission to install new floodlights at our Burton Road ground which is great news and will help in safeguarding our most valuable asset, our pitches.

During the winter months and the darker nights we have limited floodlit training areas to support the needs of our existing teams across the seniors and mini/junior sections. We are having to limit training sessions and share the area as best as we can across our teams. The introduction of new flood lights will allow us to rotate training and enable the pitches to recover.

Floodlighting additional pitches will facilitate additional playing days as options for our growing Mini & Juniors teams. Having more options for game time will make our club more inclusive and more available to individuals who may not be available on Sundays.

The club are committed to undergoing a full fund raising strategy to raise these funds and we are also seeking funding from relevant grants in our area, and we need your help! Our fundraising approach is as follows:

  • Phase 1 - Planning Permission & Ground Works
  • Phase 2 - Funding the Towers - we need 9 in total
  • Phase 3 - Lighting the towers - buy a bulb (we need 24 in total)
  • Phase 4 - Installation & Commission

During this first phase of fundraising we are aiming to raise £20,000.

Community impact

Our club has grown exponentially over the last couple of years, which is amazing for us, our community and for rugby. In order for us to continue to grow the club and get more and more people playing rugby we need to light more pitches.

The club is making great strides in our goal to establish a senior women’s team, and have recently introduced weekly training sessions for ladies, we are creating a pathway for our numerous girls teams to continue to play rugby at a competitive level well into adulthood.
