This is my ongoing struggle to finish a documentary on how climate change is increasing the risk of war in the Arctic.

Still working at this.....

Dear Supporter,

As you know I decided to stop writing these updates unless there were any positive developments to report. But I've still been doing all I can to get a broadcaster or streaming service interested although it has been hard to maintain my energy and enthusiasm. Obviously there is now a renewed interested in East-West tensions and conflict following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but the problem I now face is a concern that events may overtake the story.

For the two months I have been working with a Norwegian independent production company on a pitch to the Norwegian state broadcaster NRK. Until the invasion, things were looking very positive. But today I heard that NRK had decided to pull out of any collaboration. They were worried that we wouldn't be able to get any footage in Russia, and that the issue was now almost a news story, rather than a long form documentary analysis. I argued against this negative viewpoint on both counts but failed to win the day.

The reality is that rising East-West tensions only make the Arctic flash points more relevant and more risky. For example the Arctic Council has stopped functioning as it is currently chaired by Russia; formerly neutral Arctic nations like Sweden and Finland are considering going NATO; and Nordic airspace is being increasingly penetrated by Russian bombers.

One new iron in the fire since I last wrote is that earlier this year I made contact with David Shukman, formerly both the BBC Defence Editor, and more recently BBC Science Editor. David and I made a successful film together back in the 90's on the threat of biological weapons and now he is looking for climate change projects outside the BBC, we decided to collaborate again. David has re-voiced and done a short introduction to the original sizzle and we're beginning a new round of pitching to broadcasters. It's early days but at least I don't feel I'm flogging this project all on my own anymore. And I was pleased to loose the computer voice over!

So we are still not there - but if anyone is interested the slightly tweaked sizzle with David's introduction is at https://vimeo.com/679127726.

Thank you all again for your support - I'm still trying!

David
