MELANOMA-ME FOUNDATION

Melanoma-Me Foundation is a charity like no other. They are no other support services specifically in the Northeast or nationally that provide a holistic approach for people affected by malignant melanoma. The support we offer is for people who have been diagnosed with melanoma from stages 0-4 and for family members who have lost due to the disease. We provide grief therapy, support groups, one to one counselling and support as well as complimentary therapies. Our counselling services have been described as a lifeline, but have had to be limited due to a lack of funding and an increase of pressure on the charity during the pandemic - which put a huge strain on the charity, increasing referrals by 300%. We are reducing the strain on the NHS as well as supporting people whose family members have died from malignant melanoma. We also work with service users who are unfortunately at times diagnosed as terminal. Unfortunately, we are unable to change their prognosis, however we can help them to explore feelings and come to terms with end of life.

Melanoma-Me Foundation are very heavily involved with our community and appreciate the input and continued community involvement that allows us to develop as an organisation and ensure we are providing a service that works for our clients. We use Facebook as a social outlet and have over 9000 followers, we receive 100's of messages weekly from people who require our service and also from those who fully support and advocate what we do.. We are currently planning with our community Toms Fest a festival in memory of a local man Tom Linton who died at 20 years old from malignant melanoma. Local singers, bands and companies have all supported us. The media have supported the cause too including ITV news and local and national newspapers. The public attention has brought in more referrals as more people are aware of the charity and what we are doing. Without additional counsellors we will not be able to support this increase in demand. We also work with local universities and support student counsellors with qualifying. Over the past year 6 counsellors have qualified with Melanoma-Me Foundation.
