Medical supplies for Ukraine armed forces no.4

Aim: Sadly for the 4th time, I am raising money to buy and donate emergency medical supplies to the front line soldiers in Ukraine.

Sadly the war continues and the Kremlin still pursues its maximalist aims of subjugating the whole of Ukraine. Trumps wild statements about ending the war in 24 hours are a distant almost laughable memory and US aid is winding down. Europe is trying but struggling to fill the gap.  Every bit of aid to Ukraine is now more important than ever.

For over 18 months I have been supporting a small group of volunteers who collect much needed vehicles and equipment for the front line.  With the help of many very generous donors I have supplied 4 trucks, generators and a wide variety of combat first aid kit, totalling somewhere around £25-£30,000.  Its hard to put a number on it as some of the kit has simply been given to me for free including approximately £2,500 worth of large generators that only just fitted in the trucks.

Most recently I handed over another truck, 80 tourniquets, 90 Haemostatic gauze and 100 chest seals along with 3 generators.  Below is some photos of the kit loaded up and handed over to the Ukrainian armed forces.  

I have met some fantastic people who volunteer their own time and money to get themselves out to Ukraine and deliver this kit.  One of the main characters and his wife have travelled out to Ukraine around 14times already and between them and the convoys they help coordinate, they have delivered over a hundred vehicles each one piled high with kit.

All of this is coordinated by a family member in Ukraine with strong ties to the military, this really helps them get the equipment via Kyiv to those who need it most on the front.

With the money raised through this crowdfunder, I will again purchase as many medical supplies as possible, donate these to the team who will then arrange transportation, via another truck I have just purchased with my family, to Ukraine, ensuring they get directly into the hands of the frontline medics who so desperately need them. The aim is simple, to save lives that would otherwise be lost unnecessarily.

I have established some amazing contacts in recent months including link's to Ukrainian combat medics who have provided a detailed list of the key items that are currently in short supply along with specific purchase details to ensure that anything purchased is of a suitable quality and specification. I have also spoken to a British armed forces medic who has spent time in Ukraine training Ukrainian medics. He has confirmed the situation out there with shortages of good quality supplies and shares the view of the Ukrainian medics around the most useful items. 

Most recently I have secured fantastic deals from an online supplier, to purchase more products at discounted prices. Below is one of the most recent purchases we made which amounts to over £5,000 of combat first aid kit including chest seals, Haemostatic gauze and tourniquets.  Each one of these items has the potential to save a life.

Items that I am looking to buy with any money raised include the following:

• Haemostatic gauze (Celox Rapid) – This has a clotting agent that staunches sever bleeding and is a big lifesaver (c.£30 each)
• Crepe bandages – These are used as traditional bandages but also scrunched up and packed into severe wounds as a temporary fix (<£1 each)
• Major bleed pressure bandage (c. £5 each)
• Surgical tape – Used as normal surgical tape but also as a temporary chest seal (c. £2 each)
• Chest seals – The medics tell us that they are losing almost as many people to chest wounds due to the significant shortage in chest seals as they are to blood loss (between £1 and £10 each depending on size)
• Combat application tourniquet – These are designed to be put on with one hand by the patient (or medic). The medics tell us that ensuring these are excellent quality is essential as the cheaper ones are too flimsy which makes them less effective, especially bearing in mind the state of the patient who may be putting it on themselves (c. £30 each)
• TPAK Needle Decompression, allows for secure placement of a catheter for continuous relief during needle thoracostomy, allowing the relief of pressure to the chest following severve impact (c. £15 each).

As you can see, many of these items are relatively low in value so any amount you are able to give, no matter how large or small, would have a direct impact on someone’s life.

Convoys tend to head out most months, so this kit will get out to Ukraine within a mater of weeks after purchase.
