About us
Based in Manchester, MedEquip4Kids improves the health and wellbeing of babies and children in the UK by providing equipment and facilities not available from limited NHS resources. We also deliver the Hummingbird Project: a programme of mental health workshops in schools.
The charity was set up in 1985 by a couple after their little girl became seriously ill with meningitis and was treated at Booth Hall Children’s Hospital in Manchester, where she made a full recovery. At the time the hospital was unable to afford some vital items of equipment. To show their gratitude to the hospital that saved their daughter’s life, the couple began fundraising for the equipment.
We now work with medical staff, play therapists, community nurses and special schools throughout the UK to provide medical equipment and to improve the environment in hospitals.
Since our foundation we have raised over £25 million for children’s healthcare and last year our work had a positive impact on the health of 120,882 babies, children and young people in the UK. The equipment and services we deliver include:
- Medical equipment including neo natal monitors, incubators, pulse oximeters, phototherapy units and vein scanners, improving the care offered to the most vulnerable patients.
- Enhanced environments to calm and distract children, giving them a better experience of hospital treatment. These include multisensory rooms, soft play areas and sensory gardens.
- Specialised equipment for special schools to give children with learning and physical disabilities greater mobility and independence.
- Books, toys, games, art materials and communications aids for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).
- The Hummingbird Project, our six-week programme of workshops led by trained psychologists and volunteers to improve happiness and mental health in schools.
What would happen if you supported us?
By supporting our charity, you would be making a contribution to the health, and wellbeing of babies, children, and young people across the UK. Your donation will be spent on providing vital medical equipment for hospitals, resources for CAMHS, and a six-week programme in mental health workshops for school aged children.
Your donation can help children just like Omari pictured below. Omari is a pupil in Willow class at the Lancasterian school in Manchester. Omari was diagnosed with a degenerative condition, which caused him to rapidly lose function. Due to his limited mobility he has to lie in a horizontal position and requires supportive postural equipment to ensure that he is comfortable.
To help Omari, and his fellow pupils, we provided Acheeva beds to the school. These specialised work stations allow children to be placed in a position comfortable for them, allowing them to complete their school work and interact with their fellow pupils.
