Mayfield Nurseries

RCN 1128592, Southampton

Mayfield Nurseries offers support to people experience mental health issues, dementia, isolation and social challenges through our gardening and nature-based wellbeing and volunteering programmes. Our garden centre and cafe are open to the public, with all profits going into our wellbeing work.

Mayfield Nurseries and Cafe is a special place - as well as being a tranquil space full of plants and lovely cakes, it offers a lifeline for many people experiencing mental health issues, isolation or who are affected by dementia.

Our wellbeing and volunteering programmes support mental health through gardening, nature-based activities, peer support, social opportunities and supported volunteering to give people a chance to build their confidence and skills. Set in the Weston area of Southampton, we want to do more to help our local community. The rising cost of living, fuel and food poverty and increased isolation and mental health challenges from the Covid-19 pandemic have hit our community hard. We want to build on our existing wellbeing programmes and groups and set up -

More groups and projects for families, including support for new parents and those with babies/todders, and families who have little access to outside space at home.

Developing a food project, linked to our community cafe, which will redistribute surplus food amongst people facing hardship in our community, and provide opportunities for volunteers to get involved in growing food through our gardening programmes which can also be distributed to local people.

We are fundraising to support this work, to help us cover the cost of -

A part time family wellbeing worker who can support new parents, children and young people who are affected by mental health or poverty.

A new shed/summerhouse which can be used as a base for our project, and some equipment such as freezers to make the most of surplus and grown food.

Equipment and resources for family/children's activities such as growing equipment, a baby changing unit and craft materials.
