Raising for those that raise the community

by Matthew Campbell in Coventry, England, United Kingdom

After some life changing events made me make some life changing choices I decided to celebrate 3 months of recovery by entering the Rugby Half Marathon. Running has always been a good outlet for me to focus my thoughts, meditate if you like and I’m really pleased with how quickly I’ve progressed. It’s made me reflect on the amazing people in my life who have not only supported me over the years in many ways, but also inspired me to contribute to the amazing community I’m lucky to be a part of. With that I have decided to raise for 2 different charities that support the community in very different ways, these are:

Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity who provide vital support for anyone affected by the death of a baby. The 15th October brought Wave of Light on the last day of baby loss awareness week, an event to raise awareness of the complexities and long-term effects of losing a baby. I’m sure most would agree that the loss of a child is the worst trauma a person could go through and navigating the grief is unimaginable for most, but this is where Sands provide much needed support on so many levels not just with the bereaved but also liaising with healthcare professionals and leading invaluable research.

The other charity I’d like to raise for is the Tin Music and Arts, this is very close to my heart as a musician from Coventry. The tin has gone from strength to strength since becoming a charity in providing Coventry with such an eclectic mix of music from all over the world and providing a platform for and nurturing local talent at the same time. Their work in youth music projects makes being a musician a viable and realistic career rather than a pipe dream. However, in a time when independent music venues are closing down at an alarming rate, maintaining the Tin gets more difficult every year. The front of the building is in desperate need of repair and an opportunity has arisen where if we can raise £3000 the remainder could be matched through The Big Give, bringing up to 75% of the £12000 needed to get the work done!

Both of these charities provide essential services to our community in very different ways and keeping them going provides so much for us all. All funds raised from me running the half marathon will be split evenly between the two charities and I will start the fundraising by donating £40. Furthermore, if I manage to beat my previous half marathon time in 2015 of 2 hours and 1 minute I will double my donation.
