THE FILM
Match Made in Lagos shines a spotlight on the experiences of the everyday African woman living in the Diaspora. It captures the journey of striving for success and autonomy while navigating the quest for love amidst the affectionate yet persistent nudging of mothers eager for grandchildren.
When 37-year-old Sarima travels back to Nigeria to establish a new office for the multinational corporation she represents, she finds herself reluctantly agreeing to her mother’s matchmaking efforts. To her surprise, their connection blossoms, leading her down an unexpected and thrilling path. What initially felt like an insurmountable challenge opens doors to delightful surprises and poignant moments of growth.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
The inspiration for this project began with a skit about a dinner date back in 2013. As I recognized the sensitivity surrounding the themes I intended to portray, I shifted my focus to explore the unique mother-daughter relationships that African women face while navigating singlehood in their 30s. This film delves into the choices related to age, career, and social status. My goal is to celebrate our vibrant culture through food, fashion, art, and the lively essence of Lagos. I’m thrilled to have assembled an extraordinary team to make Sarima’s story come to life in the most authentic way possible.
