Martineau Gardens is managed and maintained organically by vulnerable volunteers. Open free, 51 weeks a year, we welcome over 12,000 visitors annually.
Our core activities are:
* Therapeutic Horticulture: working with individuals who have mental health challenges, neurodivergence, neurodegenerative conditions, and other vulnerabilities, in supported group gardening sessions.
* Young People's Therapeutic Horticulture: providing bespoke group and individual sessions for students from special schools unable to access mainstream opportunities.
* Environmental Education: hosting over 50 schools annually for curriculum-linked outdoor learning.
* Community Engagement: offering family activities, wellbeing sessions, and seasonal events.
Martineau Gardens is a cherished green space in Birmingham, offering a sanctuary for visitors and volunteers alike. Founded as a charity 26 years ago, it has grown into a locally and nationally recognised hub for therapeutic horticulture, environmental education, and community engagement. However, the Gardens face growing challenges, including rising operational costs and a critical need for a new building to maintain our existing services, expand capacity and improve accessibility.
With planning permission secured for an environmentally sustainable community building, we are now looking for funding to transform the Gardens into a year-round resource for the community. The building will include indoor classrooms, therapeutic spaces, and facilities for community events and affordable hire by other community groups.
