Our Charity & Project

We are Manchester South Central Foodbank, we work towards the prevention and relief of poverty, providing food and other essentials to those in need in our community.

We are fundraising for 'Holiday Hunger' parcels for families in need across our local area in Hulme, Moss Side, Whalley Range and Old Trafford.

Why is this Project Needed?

The cost of living crisis has seriously affected our community, with more and more families unable to afford the essentials. New YouGov polling of parents on behalf of Barnardo’s found 1 in 4 parents (25%) struggled to provide sufficient food for their child in the last 12 months, up from 1 in 5 parents (20%) in October 2022. In Manchester, an area with 37% of children living in poverty, support purchasing food and other essentials is absolutely critical for many families.

What Does This Project Do?

Our Holiday Hunger parcels provide 5 days worth of food for families that would otherwise be unable to afford to feed their children during the school holidays. We provide these parcels every school holiday and half term, with the purpose of preventing families having to access our foodbank during school holidays. During the 2023-2024 school year we provided parcels supporting 1,165 families. The parcels are distributed to families considered most in need by our partner schools.

Because of the educational disadvantage for children living in poverty, we also provide creative art and science packs, as well as books and play activities in our Holiday Hunger parcels, to address the educational attainment gap.

How Do We Know Our Project Makes a Difference?

Our Holiday Hunger food parcels make a huge difference to the families we support. In research we conducted with beneficiaries, 100% of families said they would seriously struggle to feed their children during the holidays without the support of the food parcel.

In a recent feedback session with parent's receiving Holiday Hunger parcels one parent told us: “The food parcel makes a big difference and if I didn’t get it I wouldn’t have the money to feed myself”.
