Mama to Mama is the first and only baby bank in Thanet (Kent) providing essential pre-loved clothing and equipment for vulnerable pregnant women and children under 5, who are living in poverty.
We take pride in taking only the best quality donations including baby clothes, blankets, breast pumps, prams and cots. Our care packages are beautifully curated as a bespoke ‘gift’ to boost mental wellbeing and to empower mothers and caregivers.
Through referrals from support workers, Mama to Mama supports the most vulnerable households in Thanet including people who are living in poverty, struggling with mental health issues, fleeing domestic abuse/human trafficking, refugees, care leavers or who are homeless/in temporary accommodation.
Mama to Mama promotes circular living and has so far rehoused £500,000 worth of baby items which may have otherwise gone to landfill.
Why we need your help
The significant increase in the cost of living has meant families are struggling to meet their children’s basic needs, particularly as those on low incomes are disproportionately exposed to rising costs. Vital items such as nappies have risen in price by 75% since 2022 and the total cost of having a baby has risen by a third since 2020.
This is resulting in the demand for our service increasing exponentially and we now are supporting more families than ever before including older children in addition to babies. Our costs have increased by 55% compared to last year due to the severe pressure on our service and as the only baby bank in the area, we’re struggling to survive.
Thanet is one of the most disadvantaged local authorities in England, ranking in the top 10% most deprived, according to the government’s 2019 Indices of Multiple Deprivation. It is the most deprived local authority in Kent with 1 in 3 children living in poverty.
We are often faced with families who have to make the heartbreaking choice of whether to buy nappies or put food on the table. Please help us make a difference by supporting the most vulnerable children in Thanet.
