Shelters for the battered women are an absolute must in Afghanistan. If it wasn’t for the NGOs who are running these “safe houses” for women, most of them would be in prison rotting or on the streets of Afghanistan's cities selling their bodies for prostitution.
I spend a lot of time with these women and know their stories intimately. I have sat with them many nights listening to their stories, at times crying with them, I have also been very happy and celebrated when their cases were solved and the results were in their favour.
These women are mothers, newlyweds, young girls, they are daughters, wives, sisters of men who abuse them sexually, beat them blue and black, or sell them to a man four times their age.
These are the ugly realities of Afghanistan, we know it and we are not proud of it, but we are working to bring about change in their lives and we can only do that if you the world support us. Thank you.
