Just now things are changing very fast. As we were were looking to intensify our protest in the wake of a first plane to Rwanda taking off - a general election is announced.
Until 4th July at least, all plans to deport migrants have been put on hold, and if a Labour government is elected, they have promised this policy will be a thing of the past. Keir Starmer has also expressed his continued allegiance to the European Convention.
But over the past parliament demands to ignore and withdraw from the ECHR have become increasingly commonplace, worming their way from backbenchers to Immigration Ministers to Justice Secretaries to Home Secretaries and finally to the Prime Minister. Now the newly announced leader of Reform Nigel Farage, has announced a 6 year plan to eliminate its protections altogether. The consequences of withdrawal would profoundly impact the rights and freedoms of each one of us, and the reputation of the United Kingdom in the world.
So this is not a time to be complacent. For whilst the ignorance about what ECHR is and what it does continues, it is easy for confusion to arise surrounding its purpose. We must all learn more about this bedrock of our lives and celebrate our good fortune.
We will contribute to that movement by shining the light of the past onto the fractured present, telling the story of how, after the barbarity of war, Europe raised the banners of human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
We sweep down the country now to challenge the incoming parliament to champion these values.
