Chris has been having horrid thoughts – thoughts that led to his breakup with Anya, thoughts that have since kept him from reaching out to Len. One night, Chris sulks in his flat. Desperate for someone to talk to, he returns a phone call to his best friend for the first time in four weeks. Len, a part-time Elvis impersonator, isn’t impressed. ‘Pay me’, he says. ‘Okay’, says Chris. Now, Len is on his way and Chris is panicking. What if he can’t find Len from underneath the pompadour and jumpsuit? What if he loses his friend forever?
At its core, ‘Lonesome Tonight’ is about how men love each other but hate themselves for it. The play interrogates the mask - or rather, the pompadour wig and jumpsuit - that all men wear, which stops them from calling out for help when they need it most. Using Elvis’ image as a tool to deconstruct popular notions of masculinity, the play asks, why are men scared to reach out to other men? Why are they scared to let other men love them?
