We are seeking funds to purchase a stairlift for our Community Centre to make our first floor activities accessible for our disabled clients

by Lighthouse Community Centre in Liskeard, Cornwall, United Kingdom

We are a thriving Community Centre in the heart of Liskeard offering help and support and running groups, activities and services for everyone in our community.

Unfortunately, at the present time we are having to run some of our well-being groups and one to one support sessions in our busy public café on the ground floor due to several disabled attendees being unable to access our meeting rooms on the first floor because they cannot get up the stairs.

As well as meeting rooms on the first floor we also accommodate 2 mental health link workers, a homeless drop in, employment specialist, music therapy, Normal Magic family work, youth and Children’s room and a gym. These are amazing facilities that really benefit our community however all of our clients who have disabilities are unable to access them due to the stairs. We would also like to host a breathers group however 85% of the group are unable to get up the stairs therefore we cannot proceed with this until we have a stairlift.

We are an organisation that prides itself on being accessible to all however this is not the case for our disabled clients who wish to access our critical services on the first floor.

This funding will be instrumental in helping us to enhance accessibility, safety, and quality of life for disabled people who would like to access our activities. By enabling safe and independent access to our first-floor facilities individuals with mobility challenges can participate and enjoy all our activities and facilities without unnecessary limitations.

Claire (pictured) says "Back on December 20th 2021 I had a stroke, which kept me in hospital until March 2022.  I was left with severe physical struggles and mobility problems. I was stuck in my home unable to leave the house without a wheelchair and a carer.  Slowly with a lot of community support and rehabilitation I am now able to access outside organisations, I have found a safe and caring team in the Lighthouse staff. They are now like family. I use the Lighthouse most days but I am restricted in all of the activities due to some of them being upstairs.  A stairlift will greatly improve my ability to join in with more activities and use all of the Lighthouse facilities.  Without the love and support of the Lighthouse Community Centre family I would not be sociable."
