Who are we?
We're Brighton and Hove Skateparks Association. We aim to promote skateboarding in the city by widening participation and helping improve facilities. Although we can't any credit for getting the new Hove Lagoon Skatepark built, it's fallen upon us to help raise the funds to ensure the park will be fully lit all year round.
Why are we crowdfunding?
Late last year the works on the Kingsway to the Sea Project ground to a halt as it became apparent that the current plans were unfeasible due to rising costs. In order for works to resume the council had to make cuts and unfortunately one of the cuts was for the lights at the wheeled sports facility.
It would be a massive disappointment if we had a brand new skatepark that we could only use until 4 o'clock in the winter months. It would also be irresponsible to allow such an important public space to becoming less safe and unwelcoming by leaving it in the dark.So we've decided to raise money to make sure that the new skatepark can be used in the evenings all year round.
How we’ll spend the money raised
Since the initial cuts to the budget, the council has agreed to pay for the ducting so that works on the park can be completed and putting in lights won't mean digging anything up.
We need £30,000 to pay for the cabling, lights and labour necessary to light up the new Hove Lagoon Skatepark in the evenings.
Community impact
Lighting up the skatepark in the evenings goes beyond being able to use the facilities for more hours of the day. We want this open space to be welcoming, and to feel safe for the people using it, therefore it must be sufficiently well-lit.
It would also mean that users young and old of skateboards, scooters, BMXs, WCMX and rollerskates can continue to exercise and improve their physical and mental well-being through sport in the evenings 365 days of the year.
How you can play your part
There are four simple ways to help us reach our target, and make lighting up Hove Lagoon a reality.
1. Make a pledge. Don’t delay if you’re going to support us because momentum is key to our success!
2. Spread the word. Share our project on your social media pages and tell the world to get behind us! The more people we reach, the more support we will get.
3. Offer rewards. Get involved if you are a local business by donating things we can offer to our supporters. We will give you a shout out!
4. Fundraise for us. If you want to run your own fundraiser – maybe a sponsored activity or similar – use the 'contact project' button at the top of our page to let us know. Setting up your own page only takes a few minutes and you won’t need any bank details. Just a fun idea!
