Background
The Roof of Africa is a grassroots charity providing free education and community support to poverty-stricken communities in Tanzania.
In Tanzania and across sub-Saharan Africa many children and young people, particularly those living in abject poverty, are denied opportunities to learn these crucial life skills.
Sub-Saharan Africa remains one of the most economically challenged regions globally, and in Tanzania, a significant portion of the population lives below the poverty line. This reality perpetuates cycles of poverty, as limited access to quality education and practical training hinders socioeconomic advancement.
Graduating pupils
In 2024 our first pupils graduated from the Roof of Africa primary school. Our plans are to build a secondary school but until then we have made arrangements for the children to go to other secondary schools in the area. To help them in September 2024 we launched our first Lifeskills and Life Training Program. The programme is designed to equip graduating primary school students with the essential skills needed for success in secondary education and beyond.
We launched a fundraiser for £2,000 to run a four month programme but as we were only able to raise £300, we downsized our plans but were still able to deliver an impactful one-month training programme that made a real difference in our students’ lives.
2025 plans
To build on this success, we are now aiming to raise between £3,500 and £5,750, which will enable this year's graduating pupils to benefit from a full four-month Lifeskills and Life Training program.
In addition to financial support, we are seeking donations of 30 computers (or iPads) and 10 smartphones. These resources are critical for delivering comprehensive training, including instruction on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, ensuring that Africa keeps pace with global advancements.
