LEVENS CHOIR

RCN 1010595, Kendal

Local Cumbrian choir doing local concerts and also concerts on regular tours to other regions of the country. The Choir includes young members who are supported by our choral scholarship scheme.

Levens Choir was founded in 1975 by Ian and Margaret Jones for local people to enjoy singing together.  Over 50 years it has gone from strength to strength, becoming one of the leading amateur mixed choirs in Cumbria and North Lancashire.  It has developed an active Choral Scholars Scheme to encourage young singers to join an experienced adult choir, which is now being re-established after having been laid down during the Covid pandemic.  The appointment of a new Music Director, Gawain Glenton (http://www.gawainglenton.com), an internationally renowned early music specialist, in January 2022 took the choir in ever new directions, with challenging new programmes of music from the 15th to 21st centuries.

Recent reviews commented: 'The performances were so thoroughly professional it would be easy to overlook the meticulous preparation and vocal skills that lie behind the delivery, unaccompanied throughout and often in more than 4-parts.'

'The Levens Choir sound is distinctive, with very strong ensemble unity, excellent diction, and full-throated passion. In Gawain Glenton this choir has a very distinguished and capable musical director. Together they bring us an original, stimulating selection, a fresh musical perspective.'

Our plans to present JS Bach' St Matthew Passion in 2027, to mark the 300th anniversary of its first performance, look to build on these strengths.  But for an amateur choir in a largely rural area it is a challenge to find the resources to put on such a large piece, with its requirements for professional orchestra and soloists.

Since restarting after the lockdowns of the pandemic the size of our audiences and followers on social media has increased enormously and we hope that amongst you there will be some who will want to support this wonderful project.  As well the main Levens Choir and the professional musicians we will also be working with a local youth choir, giving them a unique opportunity to experience a large-scale, iconic work, alongside professionals and very experienced amateur musicians.
