Leicester Caribbean Cricket & Social Club is a small volunteer led charity run by, and for the community.
Leicester Caribbean Cricket & Social Club was formed in 1957 as a direct result of the Caribbean diaspora in Leicester, wanting to create their own recreational activities for the community, with cricket being the obvious way to do so. The Club’s founding members were former servicemen, and new arrivals from the Windrush generation, bringing their own style and cultural tradition from the island games back home. These games, originally taking place in local parks, provided social interaction, solidarity, and an escape from the tedium of the workplace for the growing Caribbean Community. It also helped to break down the social/racial barriers the community faced, and enabled opportunities to engage with and build neighbourhood relationships with the wider community, through the universal appreciation and love of cricket.
65 years on the Club continues to deliver and support grassroots cricket, harnessing the talent from the community from both old and young members. The Club is now a diverse mix of community members, representative of Leicester's communities and providing more opportunities for women, young people and those with limited mobility to get involved in cricket. The Club provides a social and educational programme of activities alongside its core activity of developing and providing access to grassroots cricket.
Any form of community support financially is gratefully welcomed as it enables us to improve our facilities which is our primary concern as its in desperate need of renovation. This will enable us to provide a safe, inviting, community sports space that can accommodate the community needs as well as meeting the specific needs of women, young people and those with mobility issues. Your support will help us continue to be a community anchor for young people, those who are isolated and lonely, and the wider community, through our tailored programme of social and educational activities. Any financial support towards these costs, enables the Club to continue its activities and keep going for the next 65 years and more.
